Like it or not, 2000s fashion is back!

In the latest runway shows of the season we were able to catch a glimpse of what’s gonna be trending for the next few years but also we had a glance at the past with the return of early 2000’s fashion and the massive effect it had thanks to the media. From Blumarine to Miu Miu, almost every designer was able to bring nostalgia to the runway and present it in many different formats that unites and communicates the same aesthetic: mini, bare and ready to party like there’s no tomorrow.

When we talk about the 2000s we can imagine a time of free passes and a space where you could just be out there free of charge, but when it comes to fashion it was all based on cultural value specifically seen in clothes throughout the runways around the world where they communicated what was happening at the time through aesthetics such as “Barbiecore” or “Y2K”.

Now, these trends and aesthetics have made a comeback but with a twist due to the worldwide pandemic which brought to the world a certain nostalgia, and now we are looking back in time and appreciating those elements that just makes us feel at ease. One of the culturally idols we can point out is Paris Hilton with the influence she had back in the day thanks to the paparazzi, her carrying mini bags in one arm and chihuahuas in the other, getting out of a car and flashing her undies, being photographed getting blasted at the club; these are the symbols we can take from the 00s and see how they are implemented in today’s society and scene. What’s important here is that we are able to witness the different iterations a trend can have on each designer’s aesthetic approach and how the trend itself can evolve.

Also with an honorable mention and probably carrying the flag alongside Paris Hilton, is Destiny’s Child with their amazingly revealing and bedazzled custom outfits that made people go crazy. This includes the utterly controversial low rise era, which Miuccia Prada introduced to us in a refreshed and contemporary way in Miu Miu’s Spring Summer 2022 collection. This collection can be summarized in the words of Paris Hilton “Your skirt should be the size of a belt”. We may notice a positive side to this but everything has its negatives…or whatever you may think, but this trend is being led by a skinny stereotype that may be harsh on some people; it’s giving 90’s heroin-chic a controversial era led by our dear Kate Moss.

Do we have that detail-oriented eye that’s necessary to catch all the innuendos between current trends and past trends, or are we actually able to recognize them just by flipping magazines? Trends…you may follow them or you may not, but they will always find you.
